"Love is the greatest adventure."
Having been together for almost 10 years, people assume the new has worn off and we idle by each day in a state of normalcy. But for those who know Michael and I, they see that couldn't be further from the truth. We love on each other like we're newly in love, we challenge each other to become better, and we hold each other up during life's trying times. You'll never hear either of us utter a negative word about the other or our marriage because we complete each other in the best ways. When people describe a fairy tale love, I always feel like our's surpasses the world's expectations. Some say we're "lucky" and that's true! Falling in love with my soul mate when I was 16 allows more time on earth together. But strong relationships and happy marriages require work and growth from both people. You can't remain the same person you were at the beginning of the relationship and expect to see anything substantial. I could go on and on, but I'll get off my soapbox and save that for another day.
When our first wedding anniversary rolled around last November, I knew we had to document the occasion. So before leaving for our anniversary vacation, I reached out to an old friend, someone who had known Michael and I from the beginning, and just happens to have a killer eye for photography.
Kelcy Leigh has a way of capturing special moments in a deep, moody, have-to-have-it way, so she was the perfect photographer to celebrate our first wedding anniversary. Even though six months have passed since we celebrated, it's bridal season and I couldn't pass up the opportunity to highlight Kelcy (not to mention, I'll be reaching out to her again for our second anniversary in just 6 months!).
So read on to learn more about this special creative and see why YOU should meet Kelcy, too!

How would you describe your photography style?
I like to say that my style of photography is journalistic with a little direction. I like to give my clients the freedom to be themselves, let the wedding day unfold as it naturally will, let the little kids run and play like they want to, etc. and give subtle cues of direction for posing when needed. I strive to capture the natural emotions as they are expressed and felt, but I know that not everyone feels totally comfortable in front of the camera and there's always the "What do I do now?" question so, I'm always ready to chime in with help! I don't like to have my clients smiling at the camera for an hour in unnatural, awkward poses. Instead, I create a space for them to be apologetically them. Family session? Tickle fights and ring around the rosy! Engagement session? Slow dancing to their favorite song and laughing about how awkward their first encounter was. Wedding day? Twirling in your wedding dress and reflecting on the best day of your life as it's happening to you right now. This is the good stuff and that's what I love to capture in my photographs.
What's your favorite thing about photographing weddings and couples?
Everything!! ha! While I photograph all stages of life, weddings and couples have my heart. I really love being there for some of the biggest moments of someone's life. It's truly an honor to be chosen as their photographer for their engagement, wedding, anniversary, etc. I definitely don't take it for granted that I am invited into such a special time of their lives and therefore I love the opportunity to create memories that my clients can reflect back on and remember exactly how they felt in that moment. There's really nothing like it! I've laughed behind my camera and I've cried behind my camera. I get to experience their emotions right along with them! It's exhilarating and a true honor.
What advice do you have for couples looking for a photographer?
There are so many amazing photographers out there! Take the time to find a photographer that you can truly connect with. Of course you should love their portfolio and editing style, but you should also love what they stand for and want to be their friend! You're going to trust them with the task of documenting special moments that will only happen once or twice. Do they make you feel at ease and comfortable? Do they feel like a friend or a hired professional? Photos are not just something that you should check off your list, it can be a really great experience with the right photographer! Do your research and find the one for you. :)
Thank you Kelcy Leigh for helping us celebrate one year of married bliss! Here's to many more!
